Jaydeep Chitlangia’s company Madhya Bharat Papers Limited (MBPL) was founded at a time when the government was encouraging paper production from non-conventional raw material in the early eighties. The company gradually grew in stature, navigating the hardships of the permit Raj until its dissolution in the early nineties. Today, they have branch offices in many major cities and are the first company in India to have ISI and Ecomark certification for their paper. ‘Creating wealth from waste’ is a motto of Jaydeep’s enterprise and he is focusing on adoption of an eco-friendly ethos into the firm’s operating model. Jaydeep’s big business dream is to continue with pioneering the creation of ‘wealth’ from recycled ‘waste’ paper.
In conversation with GlobalLinker (GL) Jaydeep Chitlangia (JC) shares the journey of his company.
GL: Tell us about your business and how it came into being.
JC: India was going through a paper famine in the late 70’s, and the government decided to encourage manufacturing of paper using non-conventional raw material (other than wood & bamboo). We decided as a business house to enter this segment of business.
MBPL commissioned its paper plant in 1984, Champa, Chhattisgarh, based on rice straw as its main raw material. The main products of the company are ledger, cream wove, pulp board and colour printing, under the brand MB. The company’s product are well established in the market, owing to their consistent quality, and are widely used for writing and printing in various sectors.
The next step is to move to an eco-friendly mode of operation and we have started doing so by recycling waste paper in 2015.
GL: What are the challenges you have faced in establishing your business?
JC: India was a regulated economy, and the challenges of the same were faced by us. It was not easy to expand the business and dealing with bureaucracy was always a challenge in the initial years of the enterprise.
GL: What are the milestones of your business?
JC: Madhya Bharat Papers Limited is the first unit in the country to have ISI and Ecomark for its cream wove variety. The company enjoys a strong goodwill and has an established customer base in the market. MBPL has an impressive pan-India dealer network and branch offices in many major cities.
GL: How did you hear of GlobalLinker? How has it helped you?
JC: I heard of GlobalLinker through mailers. It has been extremely helpful as a networking solution.
GL: What is your big business dream?
JC: The big business dream is to remain ahead of the curve, and ensure happy customers. In 2015, we changed track and started making our paper by recycling waste paper, thereby becoming truly a waste to wealth generator. We hope to continue pioneering in the paper-making field as we are doing today. We want to encourage and help create an eco-friendly environment.
GL: What is your message to aspiring entrepreneurs?
JC: Life is not easy, keep your ears to the ground as an entrepreneur and never ever lose touch with customers.
